Princess PSA

One thing I often hear behind me when I am dressed up is “I wish I was pretty enough to do that”. Up to now I’ve been quiet and have tried to think of a good response.

I’ll be the first one to tell you that I have self confidence issues. I’ve never really thought of myself as beautiful. I grew up with the world telling me that I was not the definition of beauty. But as I’ve grown up, I’ve realized that beauty isn’t on the outside. What makes me feel beautiful isn’t putting on these extravagant gowns. What makes me feel beautiful is the look of wonder in a child’s eye when they see their favourite character. I feel beautiful when a mother tells me her child is still talking about meeting Beauty or the Ice Queen three days later.

But most importantly, I feel beautiful because I get to embody these characters that stand for such much more then just their outward appearance. Each of these characters teaches us such an important message!

Cinderella teaches us that you can overcome your past and impossible obstacles to pursue your goals. The Little Mermaid  and Rapunzel teach us that we should always follow our dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem. Beauty teaches us that it is okay to be different, and to never judge someone based on appearances. A certain Scottish princess teaches us to be brave and forge our own destiny in life. The Ice Queen teaches us to embrace who we are.

So next time you see a princess, please don’t focus on how pretty she is or how unattainable her look is. Let’s focus on what is important. Let’s teach our children that their determination and strength are so much more important that how they look. After all, a princesses beauty is not just on the outside. Their beauty comes from the messages they teach us, and that is why their legacy will live on forever.
